A Paradigm Shift in ABAP Development

SAP Sapphire 2026 was a turning point the ABAP community had been waiting for. The announcements made by Sonja Liénard, Head of ABAP Platform at SAP, fundamentally redefine the ABAP development experience at both the tooling and AI layers.

ABAP Comes to VS Code

For 14 years, Eclipse was the only option. As of Q2 2026, that changes: ABAP Development Tools (ADT) is now available in Visual Studio Code. The initial scope covers SAP Fiori application development; Eclipse will remain the choice for full-scale ABAP development until full feature parity is reached.

The VS Code integration is not just about IDE preference — it brings ecosystem advantages too. GitHub Copilot, Amazon Q, and other modern coding agents become directly accessible to ABAP developers.

SAP-ABAP-1: An LLM Built Exclusively for ABAP

SAP announced its own large language model: SAP-ABAP-1. Trained on 250 million lines of ABAP code, 30 million lines of CDS code, and extensive technical documentation, the model will be made available through the GenAI Hub, enabling partners and customers to build their own AI-powered developer productivity solutions.

Q1 2026 data puts the practical impact into concrete terms: a 20% reduction in time and effort to write ABAP/Java code, 25% less time spent on testing, and 4.4% faster time to realized value.

ABAP MCP Server and Agentic Development

The new ABAP MCP (Model Context Protocol) Server exposes ABAP development capabilities — with and without AI — to agents. Existing ABAP AI use cases will be refined and offered as tools or dedicated ABAP agents via MCP. This architecture forms the foundational infrastructure layer integrating the ABAP ecosystem into the modern agentic development world.

Custom Code Agent for S/4HANA Migrations

One of the biggest sources of complexity in S/4HANA migration projects is accumulated custom ABAP code — business logic built up over many years. SAP addressed this directly: a dedicated ABAP custom code agent for S/4HANA migration becomes generally available in Q2 2026.

What Should Developers Do?

Continuing with Eclipse remains an option, but evaluating VS Code + ABAP Cloud for new projects is the right direction. For teams developing Fiori applications in particular, the VS Code transition offers concrete advantages in terms of both access to AI tooling and CI/CD pipeline integration.
